BDS is a four-year course followed by a compulsory one-year rotating internship — five years in total. The subject and paper names on this page follow the Dental Council of India’s Revised BDS Course Regulations, which is still the framework current college syllabi cite.
Two things worth knowing. The DCI itself was replaced by the National Dental Commission in March 2026, but that is a change of regulator rather than of syllabus — the subject list is unchanged. A draft competency-based BDS curriculum has also been circulating, so this page follows the regulations your college is almost certainly still running on. Check your own university scheme before you buy.

Gross anatomy (with emphasis on head, neck, upper limb and thorax relevant to dentistry), general embryology, and general histology of body tissues.
Systemic human physiology (nerve-muscle, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, GI, endocrine, reproductive systems) with emphasis relevant to dental practice.
Basic and clinical biochemistry (metabolism, enzymes, molecular biology basics) plus nutrition and dietetics as relevant to general and oral health.
Morphology of permanent and deciduous teeth, tooth development (odontogenesis), and the histology of tooth and periodontal tissues — the first clearly 'dental' subject of the course.

General mechanisms of disease — cell injury, inflammation, healing, neoplasia, hemodynamic disorders, and basic systemic pathology.
General and systemic microbiology (bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology, immunology basics) with relevance to infection control and oral microbial disease.
General pharmacological principles and systemic drug classes, plus drugs and therapeutics specific to dental practice (local anaesthetics, analgesics, antibiotics in dentistry, drug interactions relevant to dental treatment).
Physical, chemical, mechanical and biological properties of materials used in dentistry (impression materials, cements, restorative materials, waxes, gypsum products, etc.).
Introductory/preclinical laboratory course in complete denture and fixed prosthodontics (crown & bridge) fundamentals, typically practical/viva-focused at this stage.
Introductory/preclinical laboratory course in cavity preparation, restorative principles and basic operative dentistry techniques, typically practical/viva-focused at this stage.
Introductory oral pathology and oral microbiology, per the DCI 2007 regulation taught with modest hours in Year 2 (~25 lecture + 50 practical hours) as a foundation, then substantially expanded in Year 3. Some older college handbooks show this subject starting only in Year 3 — its presence in Year 2 may vary by college/regulation vintage.

Systemic clinical medicine — history-taking, physical examination, and diagnosis/management of common medical conditions relevant to safe dental practice and patient management. DCI-specified hours: 60 lecture, 90 practical, 150 clinical. Examined at the end of 3rd year (one of the three '3rd BDS examination' subjects, along with General Surgery and Oral Pathology & Oral Microbiology).
Principles of general surgery and surgical patient management relevant to dental practice. DCI-specified hours: 60 lecture, 90 practical, 150 clinical. Examined at the end of 3rd year (one of the three '3rd BDS examination' subjects).
Full clinical-years treatment of oral pathology and oral microbiology, expanding substantially from the introductory Year-2 coverage. DCI-specified hours: 120 lecture, 80 practical, 200 clinical. Examined at the end of 3rd year (one of the three '3rd BDS examination' subjects).

Management of the dental and oral health of children and adolescents, including preventive dentistry, behaviour management, and paediatric restorative/pulp therapy. Taught across 3rd and 4th year; examined only in the Final BDS (4th year) university examination.
Diagnosis and correction of malocclusion and dentofacial irregularities, including fixed and removable appliance therapy. Taught across 3rd and 4th year; examined only in the Final BDS (4th year) university examination.

1 year (compulsory paid rotating internship, undertaken after passing the Final/4th-year BDS examination, before the BDS degree is conferred). Per the DCI Revised BDS Course Regulations 2007, every candidate who passes the Final BDS examination must complete one year of compulsory paid rotating internship at a recognised dental college/hospital before the BDS degree is granted ('the internship shall be compulsory and BDS Degree shall be granted after completion of one year paid Internship'). The internship totals 1920 clinical hours and rotates the intern through departments; the regulation's indicative day-wise allocation is: Oral Medicine & Radiology (20 days), Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (30 days), Prosthodontics (30 days), Periodontics (15 days), Conservative Dentistry (10 days), Paediatric Dentistry (15 days), Oral Pathology & Microbiology (10 days), Orthodontics (10 days), Community Dentistry/Rural service (30 days), and an elective posting (10 days).
NEET MDS — conducted by National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), New Delhi (natboard.edu.in) — conducts the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Master of Dental Surgery (NEET MDS) every year.. NEET MDS is India's single national entrance examination for admission to 3-year MDS (Master of Dental Surgery) postgraduate programmes, taken by BDS graduates (candidates must have completed or be in their final months of the compulsory rotating internship, per eligibility rules). It is a computer-based test of 240 multiple-choice questions across dental and allied medical subjects. For NEET MDS 2026: the exam was held 2 May 2026 with results declared 2 June 2026; a total of 6,228 MDS seats were offered nationally. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) runs counselling for 50% All-India-Quota seats plus deemed/central-university and ESIC/AFMS institute seats, while state authorities (e.g. Punjab's BFUHS) separately run state-quota counselling; as of early September 2026, round-1 seat allotment had been completed and further counselling rounds were still ongoing at the state level. The March 2026 creation of the National Dental Commission, which replaced the DCI, leaves NEET MDS running as before — same conducting body, same format and the same seat structure.

Seven clinical subjects are introduced in third year but have no separate third-year university exam — they carry into the final year and are examined there. Their textbook lists sit on the Fourth Year page for that reason.
