The national institutes, the ICMR and CSIR laboratories, the DBT centres and the state health-science universities — what each takes scholars in, and how.
A PhD in medical and health sciences in India is a research degree, not a clinical qualification: you register under a recognised supervisor in a department, complete one semester of coursework, defend a protocol before a Research Advisory Committee, run the study for three to five years and then defend a thesis before external examiners. It runs alongside the MD/MS/DNB training route rather than inside it, and it is the standard entry point into faculty research posts, ICMR and DBT project leadership, industry R&D, regulatory science and the non-clinical teaching cadres. Two quite different groups do it: clinicians who already hold MD, MS or DNB and want a research track alongside practice, and MSc, MPharm, MPT, MSc Nursing and MPH graduates for whom the PhD is the terminal degree of their line. The degree is awarded either by an institute that is itself a deemed or autonomous university (AIIMS, PGIMER, JIPMER, NIMHANS, SGPGIMS, HBNI, AcSIR, RCB) or by a state health-science university to which your college is affiliated, such as MUHS in Maharashtra. Where you register matters more than the subject name printed on the certificate, because the supervisor, the funding line, the animal house or biosafety facility and the patient material you can reach are all institute-specific. For a Pune candidate the practical shortlist usually mixes MUHS-affiliated departments, NIV and NARI/NITVAR under the ICMR-AcSIR route, CSIR-NCL, and the national institutes that admit from anywhere in India.
Subjects. PhD across roughly 32 departments and centres. Basic sciences: Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology, Biophysics, Biotechnology, Medical Genetics/Reproductive Biology, Laboratory Medicine. Clinical and applied: Medicine, Paediatrics, Neurology, Psychiatry, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Anaesthesiology, Nuclear Medicine, Radiology, Dermatology. Public health and allied: Community Medicine, Biostatistics, Nursing, Dental Sciences, plus the Dr B R A Institute Rotary Cancer Hospital and the National Cancer Institute Jhajjar.
How you get in. Two-stage national written test - aptitude and research-methodology MCQs followed by subject MCQs - then a departmental clinical or practical assessment for roughly three times the advertised seats, with final selection on combined merit. Seats are split into Fellowship Available (institute-funded) and Own Fellowship (CSIR-UGC NET/JRF, ICMR JRF, DBT-JRF, NBHM and similar), plus a sponsored category for government and PSU employees.
Intake. Two sessions a year, January and July
MBBS and BDS entrants need 55 per cent aggregate; MSc, MTech, BAMS and BHMS entrants need 60 per cent; MSc Nursing entrants need 55 per cent. MD, MS, MDS, DM, MCh and DNB holders are eligible in their own right and are the only group that can generally register in clinical departments. The newer AIIMS at Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur, Rishikesh, Nagpur, Bathinda, Bibinagar, Deoghar, Gorakhpur, Guwahati, Kalyani, Mangalagiri, Raebareli and Rajkot run their own PhD admissions on the same broad pattern, with smaller intakes, less competition and strong basic-science departments - a realistic target if the Delhi entrance is not clearing.
Subjects. PhD in all medical disciplines and all non-medical disciplines - medical basic sciences, clinical departments, life sciences, and social and behavioural sciences. Strong groups in Virology, Parasitology, Medical Microbiology, Immunopathology, Experimental Medicine and Biotechnology, Community Medicine and School of Public Health, Biostatistics, Pharmacology, Hepatology, Neurology, Endocrinology, Nuclear Medicine and the National Institute of Nursing Education.
How you get in. Countrywide entrance examination conducted by PGIMER followed by departmental selection. Candidates who already hold an external fellowship from a recognised funding agency are exempted from the entrance examination. A limited number of PGI fellowships and research-scheme posts are filled on merit with faculty sponsorship.
Intake. Two sessions a year, beginning 1 January and 1 July; notices appear September-October and March-April
Medical sciences candidates need MBBS or MDS or a relevant master's with 55 per cent, or MD/MS in the subject. Non-medical and life-science candidates need MSc or equivalent with at least 60 per cent in a subject allied to medical sciences. Minimum period of study is three years with thesis submission expected within five, reducible to two years in exceptional cases. PGIMER is the most open of the national institutes to non-medical postgraduates and to clinical-department registrations by MD/MS holders.
Subjects. PhD in medical basic sciences - Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology - and in clinical and applied departments including Medicine, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Psychiatry, Cardiology, Endocrinology, Transfusion Medicine, Preventive and Social Medicine, Biostatistics, Medical Physics, Nursing and Allied Health.
How you get in. Two channels: a dedicated cycle for candidates holding NET/JRF or equivalent fellowships, admitted on interview and departmental assessment, and a JIPMER entrance test route for the remaining seats. Selection is department-wise against declared vacancies and available guides.
Intake. Advertised cycles including a February session for fellowship-qualified candidates
JIPMER publishes its own PhD guidelines alongside the UGC framework, and is an Institute of National Importance awarding its own degree. It is a strong option for candidates who already hold CSIR, ICMR or DBT fellowships, since the fellowship-qualified stream competes only on interview and supervisor fit rather than a further written test. Nursing, Medical Physics and Public Health streams are well established here.
Subjects. PhD across 28 academic departments in mental health and neuroscience - Neurophysiology, Neurochemistry, Neuropathology, Neuroanatomy, Neurovirology, Neuroimaging and Interventional Radiology, Clinical Psychology, Psychiatric Social Work, Mental Health Education, Speech Pathology and Audiology, Human Genetics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Neurology, Psychiatry, Neurosurgery and Nursing.
How you get in. Institute entrance examination followed by interview and departmental assessment, with exemption or direct interview for candidates holding a valid external fellowship. Selection is against declared departmental seats.
Intake. Two sessions a year, January and July
NIMHANS is an Institute of National Importance and the single strongest destination in India for clinical psychology, psychiatric social work, neurochemistry and neurophysiology doctorates. It admits MPhil Clinical Psychology holders, MD Psychiatry and DM Neurology holders, MSc Neuroscience and life-science postgraduates, MSc Nursing (Psychiatric) graduates and MA/MSw candidates in psychiatric social work, so it is one of the few places where a non-medical mental-health professional can build a full research career.
Subjects. PhD in medical and allied basic sciences and in super-speciality clinical departments - Molecular Medicine and Biotechnology, Medical Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Pathology, Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Nephrology, Neurology, Nuclear Medicine, Haematology, Transfusion Medicine, Biostatistics and Health Informatics, and the College of Nursing.
How you get in. Institute entrance examination and interview, with a separate track for candidates holding external fellowships tenable at SGPGIMS. Registration is against a named supervisor in a department with a vacant guide slot.
Intake. Advertised annually, with sessions aligned to the institute academic calendar
SGPGIMS is a super-speciality institute, so its clinical PhD departments are concentrated in organ-system specialities rather than general medicine, and its Molecular Medicine, Medical Genetics and Clinical Immunology groups take large numbers of MSc and MTech biotechnology graduates. It is a good fit for candidates who want laboratory work tightly coupled to a specific patient cohort - transplant immunology, hepatology, endocrine genetics.
Subjects. PhD across recognised faculty and departments institution-wide - Gastrointestinal Sciences, Haematology, Clinical Virology, Clinical Microbiology, Neurological Sciences, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Community Health, Biostatistics, Nursing, Physiotherapy/Occupational Therapy and the Allied Health Sciences departments.
How you get in. Selection is supervisor-led: candidates are recommended for PhD registration by the guide with whom they have generally already worked for a period, and are then registered with the relevant awarding university. Fellowships are held from ICMR, CSIR, UGC, DBT and DST.
Intake. Registration follows the awarding university's cycles rather than a single institute-wide entrance date
CMC does not award the degree itself - PhDs are registered with Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University, Thiruvalluvar University or Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, depending on the department and subject. The practical route in is to join a laboratory or clinical unit as a project staff member or research assistant first and convert to registration once the supervisor is satisfied, which suits candidates who want to be judged on bench performance rather than an entrance paper.
Subjects. PhD in Life Sciences and Health Sciences with a cancer focus - cancer cell biology, tumour immunology, cancer genetics and epigenetics, stem cell biology, structural biology, chemical biology, radiation biology, cancer epidemiology and biostatistics, clinical and translational oncology research, and Medical Physics through the radiation oncology and medical physics groups.
How you get in. Online entrance examination followed by an interview at ACTREC. Candidates who already hold a Junior Research Fellowship from CSIR, UGC, DBT or another recognised agency are exempted from the written examination and go directly to interview.
Intake. Advertised annually through newspapers and online media, with intake aligned to HBNI academic sessions
The degree is awarded by HBNI, a deemed university whose constituent institutions include Tata Memorial Centre, ACTREC and BARC. Eligibility requires a two-year master's degree in a biological science such as Applied Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology or Microbiology with over 60 per cent aggregate; one-year postgraduate programmes are not accepted. Around 21 ACTREC scientists are recognised HBNI research guides. This is the country's deepest concentration of cancer-specific doctoral supervision, and clinicians in TMC's oncology departments can register on the Health Sciences side.
Subjects. Institute-specific and disease-focused. NIN Hyderabad: public-health nutrition, micronutrients, nutrition biochemistry, food safety and toxicology. NIRT Chennai: tuberculosis and HIV-TB across bacteriology, virology, clinical research and pharmacology, immunology, epidemiology and statistics, health economics and social and behavioural research. NITVAR (formerly NARI) Pune: HIV prevention, care and translational virology. NIV Pune: viruses of public-health concern, outbreak investigation, diagnostic virology and vaccine research. NIRBI (formerly NICED) Kolkata: cholera, enteric and diarrhoeal diseases. NIMR Delhi: malaria and vector-borne diseases. NIE Chennai: epidemiology, health technology assessment and surveillance methods.
How you get in. PhD registration runs through the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR) under its Faculty of Medical Research, with ICMR institutes acting as recognised AcSIR centres. Selection is by AcSIR application, screening and institute interview; candidates are expected to hold a fellowship such as CSIR-UGC NET JRF, ICMR JRF/BRET, DBT-JRF or DST-INSPIRE tenable at the institute. Some institutes additionally run their own advertised PhD cycles.
Intake. AcSIR admits twice a year, for the January and August sessions
ICMR runs 27 institutes nationally, so the choice is really a choice of disease and method rather than of a general department. For a Pune-based candidate, NIV and NARI/NITVAR are both in the city and both admit MSc microbiology, biotechnology, life-science and MBBS/MD candidates; NIV in particular is the national reference laboratory for viral outbreaks and offers BSL-3 and BSL-4 experience that very few other places in India can. NIN Hyderabad is the route for nutrition and public-health nutrition doctorates, and NIE Chennai for epidemiology and health technology assessment.
Subjects. IICB Kolkata: infectious disease biology, leishmaniasis, cancer biology, drug development and molecular medicine. CCMB Hyderabad: cellular and molecular biology from biomolecular structure to cell, organism and population biology, with medical genetics, reproductive biology and diagnostics. CDRI Lucknow: drug discovery and development, medicinal and process chemistry, pharmacology, toxicology, parasitology and endocrinology. IGIB Delhi: genomics, molecular medicine, bioinformatics and proteomics, including rare-disease and genome-editing programmes. NCL Pune: chemical sciences with a computational biology and bioengineering track relevant to biomaterials, drug delivery and biocatalysis.
How you get in. Applications are made online through AcSIR, which is the degree-awarding academy for CSIR laboratories. A valid research fellowship offer as JRF or SRF from UGC, CSIR, DBT, ICMR, BINC, DST-INSPIRE or an equivalent agency, tenable at the laboratory, is a firm requirement; lectureship-only NET, GATE scores and similar qualifications without an attached fellowship are not sufficient. Shortlisted candidates face a written screening and interview at the laboratory.
Intake. Twice every year, for semesters beginning in January and August
Entry needs a master's in chemical, physical or biological sciences, or a bachelor's in engineering, medicine or a four-year BS programme; sponsored candidates from industry are admitted separately. This is the cleanest route for an MSc biotechnology, microbiology or biochemistry graduate from Pune who has cleared CSIR-NET JRF - NCL is local, and IGIB and CCMB are the strongest genomics destinations. Clinicians with MBBS or MD are eligible and are actively sought for translational programmes at IGIB and CDRI.
Subjects. NII New Delhi: immunity and infection, genetics, cell signalling and cancer biology, chemical biology, biochemistry, structural and computational biology. NCBS Bengaluru: cellular organisation and signalling, genetics and development, neurobiology, evolutionary ecology and theoretical biology. THSTI Faridabad: translational health science, vaccine and immunology research, maternal and child health cohorts, infectious disease and clinical translation. inStem Bengaluru: stem cell science and regenerative medicine, cardiovascular development and disease, chemical biology for therapeutics, barrier tissue homeostasis, neurodevelopment and disease modelling, metabolic regulation of cell fate. NIBMG Kalyani: biomedical genomics - cancer functional genomics, genetic determinants of infectious disease, statistical and computational genomics, and multi-omics of complex disorders.
How you get in. Online application followed by interview at the institute, with a national fellowship required or strongly expected. NII requires an active five-year fellowship from CSIR, UGC, DBT or ICMR and selects on interview performance. NCBS and inStem admit largely through the Graduate School interview route following the national biology screening examination. NIBMG offers both a PhD and an Integrated PhD track.
Intake. NII admits twice a year - a winter session starting January with applications around August-September, and a monsoon session starting July with applications around February-March - and enrols roughly 25 to 30 scholars a year. Others follow annual or twice-yearly cycles.
Degrees are awarded through partner universities rather than by the institutes themselves: NII awards through the Regional Centre for Biotechnology (RCB) Faridabad, THSTI through RCB and through a joint programme with JNU, and NCBS and inStem through TIFR and the Manipal Academy of Higher Education respectively. Eligibility spans master's degrees, four-year bachelor's degrees in science and technology, MVSc and MBBS. These are the best-funded pure-research environments in Indian biology and suit candidates aiming at an academic or biotech R&D career rather than a medical-college faculty post.
Subjects. PhD in pharmaceutical sciences across Pharmaceutics, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Medicinal Chemistry, Natural Products, Pharmaceutical Analysis, Pharmaceutical Technology (Biotechnology), Pharmacy Practice, Pharmacoinformatics, Biotechnology, Regulatory Toxicology and Medical Devices.
How you get in. National-level NIPER entrance examination followed by interview, with separate consideration for candidates holding GPAT, CSIR-UGC NET JRF, DBT-JRF, ICMR JRF or DST-INSPIRE awards. Registration is against a named supervisor and department.
Intake. Annual admission cycle with intake announced ahead of the academic session
NIPER is the institute of national importance for pharmacy, and the natural destination for MPharm graduates as well as MSc chemistry, biotechnology and life-science postgraduates moving into drug discovery, formulation science, pharmacokinetics or regulatory science. Pharmacy Practice and Pharmacoinformatics accept PharmD and clinical-pharmacy candidates. Placement into the Indian pharmaceutical industry from a NIPER PhD is the strongest of any route in this list.
Subjects. Medical Physics, Health Physics and radiation dosimetry; radiation biology and radiobiology; nuclear medicine and radiopharmaceuticals; molecular imaging; radiation protection and emergency response; and, at INMAS, nuclear medicine, radiation countermeasures, neuroimaging, cognitive neuroscience and high-altitude physiology.
How you get in. BARC admits through HBNI, which awards the degree, using the DAE Doctoral Fellowship Scheme, the BARC Training School route and direct research-fellowship entry followed by interview. INMAS research scholars register with an affiliated university or through the DRDO research-fellowship route, working under DRDO scientists.
Intake. Annual cycles tied to the DAE and DRDO fellowship calendars and the HBNI academic sessions
This is the specialist track for medical physicists. The usual entry qualification is an MSc in Physics or an MSc/PGD in Medical or Radiological Physics, and candidates typically hold AERB certification or radiological safety credentials. Careers run into radiotherapy departments of cancer hospitals, regulatory bodies, imaging equipment industry and academic medical physics. Tata Memorial Centre's own medical physics group under HBNI is closely linked to this ecosystem, so candidates often apply across BARC, TMC and INMAS together.
Most state health-science universities also run full PhD faculties alongside the national institutes, and for a candidate who is already teaching in an affiliated college this is usually the most practical route because you can register against your own department and continue working. Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) Nashik is the relevant one for Pune: it registers PhD scholars across its Medical, Dental, Ayurved, Unani, Homoeopathy, Nursing and Physiotherapy/Allied Health faculties, admits through a university PhD entrance test with exemption for NET, SET and JRF holders, and recognises guides in affiliated colleges across the state, including the large Pune teaching hospitals. The same pattern holds at Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) Bengaluru, The Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University (TNMGRMU) Chennai, Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) Thrissur and Dr NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS) Vijayawada. These universities follow the UGC 2022 framework - entrance test plus interview, one semester of coursework, six-monthly Research Advisory Committee review - and they are the main route by which MD, MDS, MSc Nursing and MPT holders working in private and government colleges convert clinical experience into a doctorate, very often on the part-time mode with an employer No Objection Certificate. The trade-off against a national institute is supervision depth and laboratory access, so candidates doing bench-heavy work usually collaborate with a nearby research institute while registered at the state university.

| Fellowship | Awarding body | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| CSIR-UGC NET Junior Research Fellowship | Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR-HRDG), conducted by NTA | The main route for life-science and chemical-science graduates. Held twice a year; Life Sciences is the paper most MSc biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry and zoology candidates take. The award runs two years as JRF and converts to Senior Research Fellow on satisfactory two-year assessment, giving five years of cover for a PhD. It is tenable at universities, IITs, CSIR laboratories, ICMR institutes and medical colleges, and at AcSIR laboratories it is effectively the entry ticket. |
| UGC NET Junior Research Fellowship | University Grants Commission, conducted by NTA | Covers humanities, social sciences and a set of health-adjacent subjects including Psychology, Social Work, Population Studies and Home Science, which is the route for clinical psychology, medical sociology and public-health candidates. Held in June and December cycles. Since 2024 the NET result is issued in three categories - JRF with Assistant Professor eligibility and PhD admission, Assistant Professor eligibility with PhD admission, and PhD admission alone - so the score itself now carries candidates into doctoral programmes. |
| ICMR Junior Research Fellowship (Biomedical Research Eligibility Test) | Indian Council of Medical Research | ICMR's own fellowship for biomedical research, revised and conducted as the Biomedical Research Eligibility Test (BRET) from 2024 onward. Aimed at life-science, medical and allied-health postgraduates who want to work in ICMR thrust areas, and tenable at ICMR institutes, medical colleges and universities across the country. It is the natural award for candidates targeting NIV Pune, NARI/NITVAR Pune, NIN Hyderabad, NIRT Chennai or NIE Chennai. ICMR also runs a Nurturing Clinical Scientists scheme for fresh MBBS and BDS graduates and a Post Doctoral Fellowship for PhD, MD and MS holders. |
| DBT-JRF (Biotechnology Eligibility Test) | Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology | Awarded on the Biotechnology Eligibility Test to postgraduates in biotechnology and allied areas. Category I awardees may take the fellowship to any recognised institution in India, while Category II awardees hold it at the institute where they secure admission. Heavily used across DBT institutes such as NII, THSTI, inStem, NCBS and NIBMG, and accepted at AcSIR laboratories and medical institutes as an external fellowship. |
| DST-INSPIRE Fellowship | Department of Science and Technology | INSPIRE identifies talent through academic performance rather than a competitive entrance exam, and the doctoral fellowship supports PhD work in basic and applied sciences including health-relevant biology, chemistry and biostatistics. It runs for five years and is tenable at recognised institutions across India, and it is accepted as a valid external fellowship at CSIR-NCL and other AcSIR laboratories. It suits candidates with strong marks who did not clear NET but hold a consistent first-class record. |
| Institute fellowships | AIIMS, PGIMER, JIPMER, NIMHANS, SGPGIMS, HBNI/DAE and ICMR institutes | Each institute funds a block of seats from its own budget, advertised as Fellowship Available seats at AIIMS and as institute fellowships elsewhere, and these are the seats the entrance test competes for. Candidates bringing their own award apply against Own Fellowship seats, which are usually more numerous and easier to secure once the supervisor agrees. HBNI constituent institutions including Tata Memorial Centre, ACTREC and BARC fund scholars through DAE research fellowships. Faculty-held extramural project posts at ICMR, DBT and DST are a further route in, and time worked on a project can often be converted into a registered PhD with the same supervisor. |
| Prime Minister's Research Fellowship (PMRF) | Ministry of Education | A high-value fellowship in science and technology disciplines, running five years with an annual research grant on top of the stipend, awarded across IITs, IISc, IISERs and selected NITs and central universities. Entry is either direct, within the first semester of a PhD, or lateral, within the first two years of doctoral study. Relevant to this audience mainly for biomedical engineering, medical imaging, computational biology, bioinformatics and biostatistics candidates registered at a participating institution. |
