Microbiology is taught in 2nd year beside Pathology and Pharmacology, and it returns in NEET PG as infection cases, culture plates and stained smears. Here you will find the teachers and books toppers and students named, the image types to practise, and a plan for each stage from 2nd year to a drop year.
Estimates for Microbiology vary widely. Careers360 puts it at about 7–9 of the 180 questions and ReflexPrep at 12–14 (August 2026), so the 2026 analyses span roughly 7 to 14 questions. Both work from recalled papers, and PrepLadder's February 2026 study-or-skip guide calls the subject moderate to high yield.
Recent papers have rewarded students who did their PYQs. Marrow's review of NEET PG 2025, quoted by Careers360, rated Microbiology easy, with previous-year questions and topics repeated directly and several questions from one topic; PrepLadder's student survey and DBMCI both placed it among 2025's heavier subjects. For 2026, PW's analysis said Pathology and Microbiology featured prominently through integrated questions.
Inside the subject, bacteriology dominates. PrepLadder's May 2026 guide estimates 6–8 bacteriology questions, 4–5 from virology, 3–5 from immunology and 2–3 from general microbiology, with fewer from mycology and parasitology. Bacteriology and immunology together cover about half the subject, and Microbiology is one of the main sources of image questions across the paper.
Microbiology is taught and examined this year. Medioks' 2026 study plan builds it in a sensible order: immunology basics, sterilisation and microscopy first, then bacteriology, then virology, mycology and parasitology, then practicals. Take the practicals seriously, because stains, culture media and sterilisation instruments are what NEET PG later shows as images. Add weekly MCQs from the start.
TB, HIV, vaccines and hospital-acquired infections sit in both Microbiology and Community Medicine, so reread the Microbiology chapter when PSM reaches each programme. If you got through 2nd year on previous university questions, watch one platform's Microbiology videos or rapid revision now and follow with the PYQs. Dr Ravi Bansal (AIR 5, NEET PG 2024) started his NEET PG preparation in 3rd year.
Infections now arrive as patients in Medicine and Paediatrics: dengue, malaria, TB, HIV and viral hepatitis. Revise each organism's diagnosis when Medicine reaches its disease, because the 2026 paper tested Microbiology through integrated questions. Start Grand Tests this year if you can, and send every Microbiology miss back to your one-page tables.
Microbiology is on DBMCI's list of high-yield subjects for interns to take up early. Dr Sahed (AIR 13, NEET PG 2025) fitted PrepLadder's rapid revision and Qbank around duties as long as 18 hours, and Dr Saikumar (AIR 3, NEET PG 2024) finished his paraclinical subjects during internship. One organism group and its questions per sitting suits a duty day.
PrepLadder's 12-month plan gives Microbiology 15–20 days in the first two-month block, next to Pathology and Pharmacology. Its 90-day timetable allows four days and asks for a second look in final revision, calling the subject high-volatility. Culture media and serology markers fade quickly, so put Microbiology back into every revision cycle.
In 2025–26 student material, the Microbiology teacher named most often is Dr Preeti Sharma, who teaches both Pathology and Microbiology on PrepLadder. On PrepLadder's NEET PG 2025 toppers page, Dr Sahed (AIR 13) and Dr Sakshi (AIR 21) both credit her for the pair. Dr Sanika Mahar (INI-CET AIR 155) added her Microbiology videos to Marrow's rapid revision and BTR.
Other names come up as well. A YouTube comment under a NEET PG resource video names Dr Mamta Jawa for Microbiology, and a comment with 15 likes under Dr Akash Maity's 19-subject video (August 2025) counts Microbiology among the subjects where PrepLadder's live rapid revision works well. Student lists from 2020 recommended Dr Sonu Panwar most often, one of them for his live lectures.
Named Dr Preeti Sharma for Pathology and Microbiology and said her mnemonics made both hard to forget.
Combined Marrow's rapid revision, Dr Preeti Sharma's videos and BTR for Microbiology, and advises one primary source with extras only for weak areas.
Relied on video lectures for Pathology and Microbiology concepts, and analysed each Grand Test on the day he took it.

Rosters as listed on each platform's own 2026 course pages (read 2 Oct 2026). Teachers do change between editions, so check the course page before you buy.
Two details matter if you are buying a course or inheriting notes. Marrow and DBMCI One are sister brands, and both list Dr Abdul Naseer. Marrow's Edition 8.5 added more than 100 hours of new Anatomy and Microbiology videos by Dr Ashwani Kumar and Dr Abdul Naseer; as late as November 2024 its main Microbiology videos were Dr Shivika's, so a senior's older Marrow notes may follow different lectures.
Borrowing one Microbiology resource from a second platform is common, as Dr Sanika Mahar's list shows. Keep it to one extra and finish it. Our platform comparison lays out what each course includes.
PYQs pay off well here, since Marrow's 2025 review found questions and topics repeated directly. Solve them topic by topic after each chapter, starting with the areas PrepLadder found most repeated in August 2026: TB, HIV, hepatitis viruses, malaria, dengue, hospital-acquired infections, culture media, Gram staining and vaccines. For each organism, learn the diagnostic flow PrepLadder recommends, from “stain, to culture, to serology”, rather than a list of features.
Expect stained smears (Gram, Ziehl-Neelsen, Albert, India ink), culture appearances such as yellow colonies on TCBS and rough buff colonies on LJ medium, the germ-tube test, banana-shaped gametocytes, flask-shaped ulcers and Negri bodies. PrepLadder's 2026 image set adds the Leifson stain for flagella, swarming, sterilisation instruments, fungal lesions, cutaneous larva migrans and virus symmetry. Work through one image set a week rather than all of them in the last month.
| Area | What to know |
|---|---|
| Culture media and stains | Gram-stain differentiation; LJ, Thayer-Martin and TCBS. PrepLadder calls culture media the highest-yield Microbiology area for 2026. |
| Sterilisation | Autoclave settings and sterilisation versus disinfection; a high-weightage area in 2025 (CollegeDekho). |
| Mycobacteria | Mycobacteriology, the NTEP TB classification and the LJ culture appearance. |
| Other bacteria | Clostridium species and their toxins, catalase-positive organisms, laboratory diagnosis by organism; Nocardia and the paraffin bait technique (2025 recall). |
| HIV | Window period, ELISA, Western blot and NAAT, and NACO guidelines. |
| Hepatitis viruses | Serology, including anti-HBc IgM as the hepatitis B window-period marker. |
| Other viruses | Dengue, Negri bodies in rabies and virus symmetry. |
| Immunology | Hypersensitivity types and the classification of immunodeficiencies; 3–5 questions in PrepLadder's split. |
| Parasitology | Telling Plasmodium falciparum from P. vivax, parasites common in India, and Enterobius with perianal itching (2025 recall). |
| Mycology | Fungal infections in the immunocompromised; Aspergillus with acute-angle septate hyphae (2025 recall). |
| Clinical correlation | STIs, hospital-acquired infections and vaccines. |
Compiled from PrepLadder's 2026 study, high-yield, most-repeated and most-expected lists, ReflexPrep (August 2026), CollegeDekho and 2025 paper recall.
Microscopy, stains, culture media, sterilisation and disinfection. Draw up the organism–medium and stain–organism tables now.
Antigens and antibodies, hypersensitivity types and immunodeficiencies, then the immunology PYQs before moving on.
Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms, Clostridia and their toxins, mycobacteria, spirochaetes and STIs, hospital-acquired infections. This block carries the most questions.
HIV testing, hepatitis serology, dengue and rabies, with the virus images.
Fungi in the immunocompromised, malaria species and common parasites, then one sitting for the image set and a full round of Microbiology PYQs.
On duty days in internship, 30 minutes covers one organism group from your rapid-revision notes and 15–20 questions; look at your stain and culture tables once a week. With 90 days left, four days is PrepLadder's allotment, plus a return visit in the final revision. The internship guide shows how it fits around duties.
2026 estimates for the 180-question paper put it at about 7–14 of 180 (Careers360 7–9, ReflexPrep 12–14, both August 2026). These are recall-based estimates. Within the subject, bacteriology carries the most questions, followed by virology and immunology.
Either works for the 2nd-year exam, and 2026 book lists differ on which is primary. Medioks' comparison leans on Sastry for routine study and prof answers, and on Ananthanarayan for hard topics and NEET PG depth. Read one as your main book. For NEET PG revision, Careers360's 2026 list names Apurba Sastry's Review of Microbiology and Immunology.
In 2025–26, Dr Preeti Sharma of PrepLadder is the name toppers and students mention most, often for her rapid revision. The other 2026 courses are taught by Dr Abdul Naseer (Marrow and DBMCI One), Dr Devyani Puri and Dr Priyanka Sachdev (Cerebellum), Dr Sonu Panwar (DocTutorials) and Dr Anusha Rathi (PW MedEd). Choose the course you will finish and revise.
Learn the stains, culture appearances, parasites and classic findings such as Negri bodies, and go through one image set a week. Study each organism as a flow from stain to culture to serology, so that a picture leads you to the organism and then to its test.
They are taught in the same year, PrepLadder has one teacher for both, and the 2026 paper tested them through integrated questions. Revise an infection's Microbiology with its Pathology and treatment, but keep separate notes so each subject can be revised on its own. The 2nd-year guide has the full timetable.
Print the image pages in colour: stained smears, culture plates, parasites and lesions lose their meaning in grey. Text and tables print well in black and white. Bind Microbiology as a separate volume, and send the PDF to us on WhatsApp for a quote.
Send your Microbiology PDF on WhatsApp: your platform's main or rapid-revision notes, BTR or your own tables. We print stained smears, culture plates and parasite images in colour, keep the text pages in clean black and white, bind Microbiology on its own and ship it anywhere in India.
