Reading for Addiction Psychiatry

Addiction Psychiatry fellows read against a de-addiction ward and an opioid substitution clinic, so the texts get used for two different things: withdrawal and pharmacotherapy decisions on the ward, and the psychotherapy and relapse-prevention work in follow-up. Lowinson and Ruiz is the broad reference read systematically across the fellowship, while ASAM Principles is the one pulled off the shelf mid-shift for regimens and level-of-care decisions. Indian practice sits inside the NDPS framework and a very different service structure, so the Indian Psychiatric Society guidance is read next to the American texts rather than instead of them.
