Beyond NORCET there are seven or eight recruitments worth tracking, and the clinical syllabus overlaps almost completely. What differs is the non-nursing section, the negative marking and the number of stages — which is exactly what decides how you should prepare.
RRB Staff Nurse (officially 'Nursing Superintendent') is one of the paramedical categories recruited by the Railway Recruitment Boards for Indian Railways hospitals and health units. It is a single-stage recruitment (CBT + document verification, no separate skill test for this post) and is popular because of Railway service benefits and pan-India zone-wise postings. Vacancies are irregular/notified periodically rather than annually. As of 30 Aug 2026 the most recently completed cycle is CEN 03/2025 (272 posts); a larger 2026 cycle was anticipated but not yet notified.
| Stage | Questions | Marks | Duration | Negative marking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Computer Based Test (CBT) | 100 | 100 | 90 minutes | 1/3 mark deducted per wrong answer |
| Document Verification | — | — | — | — |
Subjects tested:
Selection: Merit is based purely on the single CBT score, followed by document verification and medical fitness examination. Qualifying (minimum) percentage in the CBT: UR 40%, OBC/EWS 30%, SC/ST 30%/25% depending on category (source figures vary slightly by cycle; treat exact qualifying cut-offs as indicative).
ESIC Nursing Officer is a Group B post for ESIC hospitals and dispensaries across India, recruited centrally by UPSC (not by ESIC's own recruitment cell), which is unusual among nursing exams and makes it effectively the main 'UPSC-route' nursing officer recruitment in India. It fills posts under the ESI Corporation, Ministry of Labour & Employment. The written exam is a single objective test followed by document/certificate verification, which is where selection ends in recent cycles.
| Stage | Questions | Marks | Duration | Negative marking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Written (Objective) Examination | 150 | 300 | 2 hours | 1/3 mark deducted per wrong answer; 2 marks awarded per correct answer |
| Document Verification / Certificate Verification | — | — | — | — |
Subjects tested:
Selection: Single-stage written objective test conducted by UPSC, merit list drawn on written score, followed by document/certificate verification and medical examination before appointment. No personality test/interview in recent cycles.
PGIMER Chandigarh is one of India's premier autonomous medical institutes and periodically recruits Nursing Officers for its main campus and satellite centres (e.g., Sangrur). The 2025 cycle exam was held in November 2025 with results in December 2025 — a single CBT with no separate interview. PGIMER pay and service conditions closely track central government norms (Level 7 pay).
| Stage | Questions | Marks | Duration | Negative marking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Computer Based Test (CBT) | 100 | 100 | 100 minutes | 0.25 marks deducted per wrong answer |
| Document Verification | — | — | — | — |
Subjects tested:
Selection: Merit purely on CBT score, subject to minimum qualifying percentage (40% UR/EWS, 35% SC/ST/OBC per one secondary source), followed by document verification. No interview.
JIPMER, one of India's premier central medical institutes, periodically recruits Nursing Officers for its Puducherry campus and Karaikal centre. The 2024 cycle (applications July-Aug 2024, CBT held 14 Sept 2024) is the most recent completed cycle verifiable as of Aug 2026. Selection is via a single CBT plus document verification; pay follows Level 7 of the 7th CPC.
| Stage | Questions | Marks | Duration | Negative marking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Computer Based Test (CBT) | 100 | 400 | 90 minutes | 1 mark deducted per wrong answer |
| Document Verification | — | — | — | — |
Subjects tested:
Selection: Merit based on CBT score followed by document verification; no separate interview in the 2024 cycle.
DSSSB recruits Nursing Officers for Delhi government hospitals and dispensaries (e.g., under Delhi Health Services). It is a state/UT-level recruiting body (analogous to a state PSC) rather than a central institute. The exam is a single CBT (heavier, 200 questions across general + nursing sections) followed by document verification; DSSSB cycles are notified irregularly and specific vacancy/notification numbers should be confirmed on the official DSSSB site (dsssb.delhi.gov.in) before publishing as fact.
| Stage | Questions | Marks | Duration | Negative marking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Computer Based Test (CBT) | 200 | 200 | 2 hours (120 minutes) | 0.25 marks deducted per wrong answer |
| Document Verification | — | — | — | — |
Subjects tested:
Selection: Single CBT (200 Qs, 2 sections: general studies/languages 100 marks + nursing subjects 100 marks), merit list, then document verification.
Every major state runs its own Staff Nurse recruitment, either through NHM (often on contractual/consolidated-pay terms feeding into regularisation) or a state PSC (for permanent cadre posts). Patterns vary by state but commonly follow: a single OMR/CBT written exam (100-150 questions, heavy weightage — 55-65%+ — on professional nursing subjects) plus document verification; some states add an interview or skill test. Age limits, qualifying marks and syllabus weightage differ by state rules. Below are four representative states researched for this compilation.
| Stage | Questions | Marks | Duration | Negative marking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NHM Rajasthan Staff Nurse — Written Exam (2025 cycle, representative example) | 150 | 450 | Not specified in sourced material | 1/3 mark deducted per wrong/unattempted answer (per sourced summary) |
Subjects tested:
Selection: Typically: written exam -> document verification -> (in some states) counselling/choice-filling for posting; contractual NHM posts are often renewed annually and may lead to regularisation per state policy. Exact process differs by state — this entry describes the general shape, not a single authoritative process.
MNS B.Sc Nursing is a female-only, fully residential, four-year B.Sc Nursing course leading to a Permanent/Short Service Commission as a Nursing Officer in the Indian Army (part of AFMS). It is not a lateral 'recruitment exam' for already-qualified nurses like the others in this list — it is an entry-level course admission for candidates straight out of 10+2 (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English), using NEET (UG) score as the mandatory qualifying gate, followed by an Army-run written test, psychological assessment, interview and medical exam. There is a separate MNS route for registered nurses (Short Service Commission for practising B.Sc/GNM nurses) that recruits experienced nurses directly by interview/selection board rather than NEET — this compilation focuses on the more heavily searched fresh-entry B.Sc Nursing course.
| Stage | Questions | Marks | Duration | Negative marking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NEET (UG) — mandatory qualifying/shortlisting exam | — | — | — | — |
| Test of General Intelligence & General English (ToGIGE) | 40 | 80 | Not specified in sourced material | 0.5 mark deducted per wrong answer |
| Psychological Assessment Test (PAT) | — | — | — | — |
| Interview | — | — | — | — |
| Medical Examination | — | — | — | — |
Subjects tested:
Selection: NEET (UG) qualifying score used to shortlist candidates for the Army's own ToGIGE written test; shortlisted candidates undergo PAT (qualifying), interview, and final medical examination; merit for course allotment is based on combined written test + interview performance among medically fit candidates.

Most candidates prepare a single nursing-subject core and then adapt. NORCET and ESIC are the largest central recruitments; RRB and state NHM cycles come up more often. The clinical syllabus overlaps heavily, so one good set of nursing notes serves all of them.
Most do, at either one-third or a quarter of a mark per wrong answer, and JIPMER has used a full mark. Check the notification for your cycle — this single detail changes how aggressively you should guess.
Yes. ESIC delegates this recruitment to UPSC, which notifies and administers it through upsc.gov.in.
