Indian nurses moving to the US, UK or the Gulf face a different exam in each case, plus an English test on top. Here is what each one is, and the material candidates prepare from.
Who it is for: Nurses seeking RN licensure in the United States and Canada (CNA/NNAS pathway); many Indian B.Sc/GNM-qualified nurses take it to work in the US.
Format: Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) administered via Pearson VUE; variable length (minimum ~85 questions, maximum around 150 for the current test plan, subject to periodic NCSBN updates); pass/fail result based on ability estimation, not a fixed percentage cutoff.
What candidates study from:
Who it is for: Internationally educated nurses (including Indian nurses) needing credential evaluation and, in many US states, CGFNS Certification as a prerequisite/companion step before NCLEX-RN or visa screening (VisaScreen).
Format: Credentials evaluation service plus, for CGFNS Certification Program candidates, a qualifying exam component; not a single standardized test in the way NCLEX is, but a certification/verification pathway used by US state boards and immigration (VisaScreen).
What candidates study from:
Who it is for: Nurses (and other healthcare professionals) needing to prove English-language proficiency for registration/visa purposes in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Canada, and Gulf countries.
Format: OET has a healthcare-specific format (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) with a Nursing sub-test option; IELTS (Academic or General Training) is the general-purpose four-skill English test many regulators also accept.
What candidates study from:
Who it is for: Nurses seeking licensure to work in UAE (DHA — Dubai Health Authority; historically also HAAD for Abu Dhabi, now unified under DOH), and similarly Prometric-administered exams for Saudi Arabia (SCFHS), Qatar (QCHP), Oman, etc.
Format: Computer-based MCQ licensing exam administered via Prometric testing centres; question content is clinical/nursing-practice based, drawing on core nursing subjects (medical-surgical, paediatric, obstetric, community, mental health nursing) plus local regulations.
What candidates study from:
Who it is for: Internationally educated nurses (including Indian nurses) seeking RN registration to work in the United Kingdom.
Format: Two-part process: a Computer-Based Test (CBT, via Pearson VUE, covering numeracy and clinical/professional practice) followed by an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) at an NMC-approved UK test centre.
What candidates study from:
It depends on the country: NCLEX-RN for the United States, NMC's CBT and OSCE for the United Kingdom, and a Prometric-delivered licensing exam for most Gulf states. An English test — usually OET or IELTS — is required alongside almost all of them.
