Reading for Molecular Medicine

Molecular medicine scholars read a cell-biology text and a human-genetics text in parallel, because the thesis usually has to connect a mechanism to a disease phenotype. Alberts is the coursework backbone and the book cited when a mechanism has to be explained from first principles; Strachan and Read is the human-genetics companion that covers variant interpretation, mapping and genomic technologies. Emery and Rimoin and Thompson and Thompson are the clinical-genetics references pulled out when a variant has to be tied to a syndrome or an inheritance pattern defended in the viva. Genomes and Lewin cover genome organisation and gene regulation at the depth a comprehensive exam expects, and Robbins stays on the shelf for the pathology framing that clinical collaborators will assume you know.

Titles are tagged core reading — the ones scholars work right through — or reference, the ones they look things up in. Editions are given where the current edition is what you want to buy.

The two lists every scholar also needs

Whatever the subject, the coursework semester is examined on research methodology, biostatistics and publication ethics, and the bench work runs on a handful of protocol volumes. Both lists are kept separately so you are not buying them twice.
