Three years is less time than it sounds. The order below is what works for most DNB Microbiology residents — broad and readable first, reference-level later, revision and drilling last.
Read Ananthanarayan cover to cover alongside daily bench work, and start Mackie & McCartney for practicals; fix basics of media, sterilisation, staining and biosafety, and register the thesis protocol.
Move to Jawetz and Koneman for depth, work systematically through CLSI-based AST and hospital infection control, and cover parasitology (Parija) and mycology; collect thesis data and present journal clubs.
Consolidate with Mandell for clinical correlation, revise Ananthanarayan two to three times, do full spotter and OSPE practice from Koneman and Parija, complete the thesis, and drill past NBE theory questions.

Ananthanarayan and Paniker's Textbook of Microbiology by Kanungo (ed.) is the usual anchor. First-pass reading and revision spine for the whole subject; most Indian residents build notes from it.
