Per the NMC guideline, summative assessment has a theory component of four papers — basic sciences applied to surgical gastroenterology; clinical and operative surgical gastroenterology; surgical gastroenterology including transplantation and minimal access surgery; and recent advances — and a practical component spread over two days when there are multiple candidates. The practical comprises case-based assessment (history, examination, differential diagnosis, investigations, management), ward rounds with discussion of clinical problems, and viva-voce on instruments, radiology, surgical pathology and videos, together with logbook and thesis evaluation.

Blumgart's Surgery of the Liver, Biliary Tract and Pancreas (2 vols) by William R. Jarnagin is the usual anchor. The single most important HPB reference for this MCh; also on the NMC list.
MCh Surgical Gastroenterology is a superspecialty course taken after a broad-specialty MD, MS or DNB, so the reading is narrower and deeper. The broad-specialty texts are assumed knowledge by the time you start.
